




Using the recognizable format of the passport photo, Naturalization is an interrogation of the American dream and assimilation. Through the lens of African immigrants, children of African Immigrants, and African international students at Stanford University, the portraits collectively tell a story of migration, identity, and loss as each person tries to find belonging within the United States. Each subject is connected to the immigration story one way or another. Some were born in the states to immigrant household. Others came to the US when they were very young, and some have only lived here for University. All were asked to share their stories meant to better understand the concept of the American dream and what it means to be a diasporic African in the United States. Here are their stories.
