In 2021, Faux mink blankets went viral on TikTok after being coined as the “Immigrant blanket.” The new title referenced the importance of these blankets in immigrant family homes. Regardless of ethnicity or origin, the immigrant blanket became a connection between American immigrant communities. It is hard to always be proud of American identity. For many communities of color, the American flag represents fear and aggression. However, the idea of “American Dream” still provides comfort to many. Your Flag is Not Mine, functional as both a flag and a blanket, offers an alternate flag for the immigrants who have not been met with the dream they sought after. Fashioned out of immigrant blankets, the American flag is reconstructed to represent the communities of color who built the country for their white oppressors. The use of tiger print, along with the title of the piece, intentionally excluding whiteness from this definition of American.
